UPDATE FOR DECEMBER 2022
Due to economic challenges it is not possible to keep classes going after the end of Session 6. A Dance Class For Me! will have to shut down as it isn't possible to continue until more money becomes available. Elizabeth Chacon appreciates your interest in the class but she can't promise when classes will reopen. If you have any questions, please contact her.
A Dance Class For Me! Description
Do you have a child who hasn't found an activity they can participate in because of sensory processing or other issues? Please consider A Dance Class For Me! This class is for them. A place to dance, play, socialize, copy, lead, and learn how to dance, dance, dance with me, me, me!
For parents who have not found an activity their child can enjoy or an activity that truly is for their special needs child this class may be the answer.
This class is specifically designed to help students wuth moderate to severe conmunication or behavioral issues on or off the autism spectrum. All students with or without special needs are welcome to the class.
Through specific movement we can create neural pathways between the left and right hemispheres of the brain to meet the goal of improving speech and communication. By patiently allowing students to process the stimuli in the class room and to copy the instructor, each student will connect brain and body a little bit more each week. Each student's confidence, coordination, and social skills will improve over the course of a few weeks.

PLEASE NOTE:
In A Dance Class For Me! some behaviors are not considered maladaptive or inappropriate and are not corrected. Those behaviors are talking, yelling, flapping, spinning, running, jumping, anything a student does to help his or her brain calm itself.
Maladaptive behaviors that are addressed and stopped are: hitting the instructor, other kids, the wall, or the mirror.
If you have questions or concerns regarding your own child's behavior, please feel free to ask Elizabeth Chacon what can be done for the benefit of your student.
COVID-19 Update to Rules
PLEASE BRING A MASK JUST IN CASE THESE REQUIREMENTS CHANGE
Parents and students must enter the building with masks on if they have not been vaccinated (please don't come if you feel sick or have been exposed to COVID-19). The instructor, Elizabeth, is fully vaccinated but will keep her mask on if the parents prefer it.
She respectfully asks all parents in the room to wear the mask if one parent feels uncomfortable in a room with unmasked people. The younger students are not expected to keep the mask on throughout class because the masks can become uncomfortable. Please read the sign on the door at Atomic Ballroom for mask protocol.
Thank you.

Nothing feels like performing for family and friends. Students should have the opportunity to perform especially if they have not been in a "show" before. Hopefully, this experience will improve their confidence so they can participate in other group activities that include performance.
Privates and Semi-Private classes are offered, 30-45 minute sessions.

Tap dance is also offered. Tap can be a separate class or added to the end of the class described above. Tap helps with rhythm and at the end of the class we have an impromptu "Tap Jam" so the students can express themselves using tap rhythm and some attitude.
There are tap shoes to try on available. Some students love making the tap sound and others don't. You can put the shoes on your child before deciding if you want to put your child in a tap class. |
A Dance Class For Me! Mommy (Daddy) & Me Style!
18 months to 2 years old / Private or group class, 30 minutes
If you have a typical child or a child with a possible autism diagnosis around 18 months to 2 years old, or if you are seeing more tantrums than communication, this class might be a good fit for you. Learn and practice what to do when a tantrum starts, learn to see it coming, learn what calms your child. And most of all learn what your child loves to do. Play, laugh, and dance with your child. Let's build a community of support for these little ones. Children at this age have limited ability to dance but lots of ability to have fun, they will learn to "mand" or ask for what they want, tell us what activity in they prefer, and learn to ask for help.
Above: Mommy & Me performance at the Santa Ana Zoo.
Private or special request classes available, contact Elizabeth for more information.
Rules for All Classes!
We practice the safest rules and most polite language.
Students are taught self-calming techniques to use when they feel overwhelmed by the size of the class, the room, the instructor's demand to copy or other reasons.
Each student learns everyone is a role model for someone. Students become role models to new students and they can carry that confidence with them into the world.
