I'm proud to announce that my students have been invited to perform at the Orange County Walk for Autism Speaks, December 9, 2018. To find out more about the walk click here.
A Dance Class For Me! (not your typical dance class) is taught by Elizabeth Rose Chacon, Certified Autism Movement Therapy® Provider for students who are autistic or have special needs that prevent them from participating in "typical" dance classes. Perhaps a student's behavior interferes with the class or the student cannot wear leotard type dance clothes or tolerate the music. In this class the student's behavior is not an issue, they can wear whatever they can move in, and they will learn tolerate the music and other stimuli.
As the weeks go on, every attempt to dance or mimic movement is celebrated. In the process their brains are stimulated and challenged by the movement. Due to neuroplasticity* (or neural plasticity) new neural pathways created in the brain, these pathways encourage communication between the left and right hemisphere of the brain. This cognitive "re-mapping" connects the hemispheres and this connection can help improve speech and communication.
In A Dance Class For Me! some behaviors are not considered maladaptive and are not corrected. Those behaviors are talking, yelling, flapping, spinning, running, jumping, anything a student does to help his or her brain calm itself. Maladaptive behaviors that are addressed and stopped are hitting other students, the instructor, the wall, or the mirror. If you have questions regarding your student's behavior, please feel free to ask Elizabeth Chacon what can be done for the benefit of your student.
If you are in Orange County and have tried other activities without success because other instructors, even in special needs activities, may be too impatient to work with your child, please don't give up. Try A Dance Class For Me! or look at the descriptions for other classes offered, click here.

*Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment. (http://www.medicinenet.com/medterms-medical-dictionary/article.htm)
