A Dance Class For Me!
A Dance Class For Me! by Autism Movement Therapy® in Orange County is a dance class taught by Elizabeth Rose Chacon, Certified Autism Movement Therapy® Provider for students who are autistic or have special needs that prevent them from participating in "typical" dance classes. Perhaps a student's behavior interferes with the class or the student cannot wear leotard type dance clothes or tolerate the music. In this class the student's behavior is not an issue, they can wear whatever they can move in, and they will learn tolerate the music and other stimuli.
Autism Movement Therapy® was developed by Joanne Lara, MA, Founder of Autism Movement Therapy® for verbal and non-verbal moderate to severe autistic students. In this class students learn they are in a safe space. They dance on their own without assistance or hand over hand manipulation. Their only job is to imitate the instructor. Self-regulation is also taught to the students to help them manage behaviors that might interfere in class.
As the weeks go on, every attempt to dance is celebrated. In the process their brains are stimulated and challenged by the movement. Due to neuroplasticity* new neuro-pathways created in the brain, these pathways encourage communication between the left and right hemisphere of the brain. This cognitive "re-mapping" connects the hemispheres and this connection can help improve speech and communication.
If you are in Orange County and have tried other activities without success because other instructors, even in special needs activities, may be too impatient to work with your child, please don't give up.
I am pleased to announce that A Dance Class For Me! will be offered fall of 2016 at the Orange County Children's Therapeutic Arts Center (OCCTAC) in Santa Ana. See more on Classes This Month

*Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment. (http://www.medicinenet.com/medterms-medical-dictionary/article.htm)
